About The Work


Exploring the relationships between emotion, colour, textures and paint, Rewarded for Getting Up Close is an ongoing series of paintings where each piece is a specific feeling.

   Using multiple layers modelling paste to build on wood panel, each piece starts with a heavily textured surface. Once the surface has been created, to visually capture each emotion, Emily incorporates elements of colour, line, and texture; each chosen specifically from personal memories.

    Aiming to access multiple senses from the viewer, Emily uses colour with an intuitive approach, exploring various materials and applications, including paint, acrylic ink, pouring medium, heavy gloss gel, and iridescent pigments. Through this combination of texture and colour, Emily aims to create a conversation between artist and audience, leaving both with a shared experience.

If I Wanted to, I’d be Alright (2019)

"If I wanted to, I'd be alright" is the feeling of warmth; like being on a road trip with your favourite music and good conversation. When the sun is shining in through the window, blinding you for a moment as it hits your face. As you close them, your eyelids suddenly ignite. The rock walls surrounding the road start to sparkle as the car flies by. Every time you feel the sun against your face, on even the coldest winter days, you're back in that moment. Knowing that the second you close your eyes, that orange glow appears.


Breathing Spaces (2019)

“Breathing Spaces" is a moment of reflection. It's a wave of calm, the kind you get when thinking about someone you don't see anymore, or taking time to slow down and just sit. It's focusing on anything other than you, existing only in that moment. The silence surrounds you, nothing but the sound of your breath.

Sometimes it Doesn’t Even Look Like You (2019)

"Sometimes it doesn't even look like you" is overwhelming. On the edge of a panic attack, you know nothing is wrong and yet something is. Unable to pull yourself out, somehow you've forgotten to breathe, and when you take a deep breath in, it's painful like lightning in your lungs. The blood in your ears feels sticky, and the hairs on your neck have grown legs, trying to run away from your brain. It’s overwhelming, but too familiar to be uncomfortable.
